Previous message                 Next message Message #: 7651 Message from: Andrew Kennedy Sent: Aug 31, 2003 Subject: OAA 1974 Preview After using 28 different batters (not counting pitchers) in '73 to win 89 games and make a playoff game with the White Sox, the question is how many players will the A's have to throw in to battle to try to win in the mid '90's, which would be needed to win in an ordinary year. Before the league passes a preemptive rule change and/or our Commissiones to preserve their sanity cancel free-agent claiming by edict, '74 for the A's should be a bit more settled, though 2b by committee is certainly a possibility as trade feelers for this position have been unsuccessful. Yeager/Tenace/McCovey/Lis/Rettenmund/Bradford/Barton will cover the c/1b/dh positions. Not too many singles; fair number of Walks, K's and Homerins. In a reversal of' 73, Griffin will play 2b against righties for most of the year, with his shortfall and the lefty position pretty much by committee. Campy has a more balanced card at SS, while Bando has nice ob and power at 3B, but not much average. Outfield is fine with Rudi, Jackson, and North, and rotation is great this year with Blue, Hunter, and Holtzman, with Hands (not '73 Hand) and Abbott getting most of the remaining starts. Fingers awesome too, though that didn't prevent him in '73 from having an ERA over 3 until after the playoff game. Again, the bulk of Angel Manguals 402 ABs will stay on the bench; its amazing how much playing times he got with 3 championship teams considering his consistently wretched production. Many Mota will settle into his role as PH deluxe, we'll ease Claudell Washington in with his backward's lefty card; doesn't looklike they'll be roster space for his namesake PR Herb. Can't expect Slayback and Hamilton and Johnson to help too much; just not to cause too much harm. A's will try to enjoy '74, then start addressing the big breakup that will occur after '76, and try to get some talent for Tenace/ Campy/Bando/Jackson/Rudi/Holtzman before they are lost DREW
