Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Reds start off the 1974 campaign in reasonably good fashion by taking 2 of 3 games in Atlanta (now we just hope Cincy can avoid the sweep at home). Game 1: Tom Seaver and Phil Niekro hooked up in a well-matched performance over 8 innings. Cincy's baserunning woes (Pete Rose blows a H&R play with Seaver on first: CS; Joe Morgan gunned at the plate even with a "Poor" plate blocker out there...) kept the game close. Both teams cashed in a run in the first, and two Mickey Rivers steals in the Atlanta sixth led to a 2-1 lead for the home team. Earl Williams answered immediately with home run #1 leading off the seventh. George Foster then walked and stole second with nobody out, but died right there. In the ninth, Cesar Geronimo's RBI single against Charlie Hough gave the Reds a 3-2 lead, and Pete Richert pitched the ninth to earn his first save in a Cincinnati uniform. Game 2: A somewhat-close game got ugly late. Don Gullett and Carl Morton were the starters, and the Reds again scored in the opening inning when Pete Rose came home on a Tony Perez groundout. Cincy turned four singles, a walk and an error into 4 runs in the fifth, then gave one back in the sixth thanks to a Marty Perez triple. Dave Concepcion greeted reliever Tom Burgmeier with a 3-run homer in the Reds eighth, and Bobby Mitchell delivered a 2-run single in the ninth to make the final score 11-1. Of course, we should have saved a few of those useless runs for.... Game 3: Buzz Capra's 1974 debut was tremendously successful, as he limited the Reds to 4 hits in a 3-1 win over Steve Hargan. Hargan's Cincinnati debut wasn't bad either: 5.2 innings of scoreless ball.... if you don't count the first inning, where he allowed 11 total bases (TWO triples, a home run & a single) and all 3 runs the Braves would get. Only a John Ellis caught stealing in the midst of the barrage prevented Atlanta from ending the game at that point. Capra didn't need more runs in any event. The only time the Reds dented the scoreboard was on Cesar Geronimo's leadoff home run in the eighth. Alan |
