July 20 Walt Dropo hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Chicago AL White Sox outscored the New York AL Yankees in 11 innings 6 to 5. The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Chicago AL won the game in the 11th inning. Minnie Minoso smacked a single. Mike McCormick then uncorked a wild pitch. After an out was recorded, A balk was stepped in and he called. Don Hoak was up next and he drew a walk. George Strickland came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Les Moss added his contribution to the rally and slapped a single making Chicago AL the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. New York AL was out-hit by Chicago AL, 15 hits to 11. The victory went to Ed Roebuck(9-4) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. McCormick(3-5) took the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 1/3 of an inning. Berra had a big day with his bat. He slapped a base-hit in the 2nd inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 4th inning and ripped a solo home run (his 17th of the season) in the 6th inning. Chicago AL was out-hit by New York AL, 13 hits to 10. Turley(7-5) allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Bob Grim earned his 14th save. The losing pitcher was Jim Wilson(9-9). He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work. Turley was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great support behind me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called game!' Shantz(7-4) put on a good performance. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed Shantz lost his no-hit bid when Bubba Phillips singled with one out in the 6th inning. New York AL had 16 hits for the night. Bob Purkey(7-5) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Purkey was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Shantz brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
