august 1 Jay Johnstone had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Dean Chance came through with a solid 7 innings at Metropolitan Stadium as the Minnesota Twins won in their last at-bat beating the lifeless New York AL Yankees by the count of 5 to 4. Minnesota won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Jerry Zimmerman doubled. Zoilo Versalles stepped up next and he stroked a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Minnesota and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. New York AL was out-hit by Minnesota, 12 hits to 6. Al Worthington(5-8) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Dooley Womack(3-4) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks without retiring a batter. Minnesota had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Zoilo Versalles began the Minnesota spurt when he drew a walk. Jimmie Hall came next and he lined a single. After another out, Rich Reese came up and he smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) making Minnesota the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 8th inning. The victory went to Ron Kline(2-2) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no runs. Dooley Womack(3-5) absorbed the loss in relief.
