In an great finish the San Diego Padres won in dramatic fashion over the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 3 at San Diego Stadium.

San Diego had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs. After two
were out Elliott Maddox got things going when he drew a walk. Dave Winfield
came next and he smashed a two-run homer (his 10th of the season) making San
Diego victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. The teams had
been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Larry Hardy(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Dave
Giusti(0-2) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 1
hit and 1 walk.

Hardy and Winfield were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory. As Mike Tomeo noted, 'A win like this one can do
wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
