Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers

Now that the race is over for us, the Cubs finally catch a few breaks on the road and pull off a sweep in Ebbets Field (thus damaging our lottery chances).  The sweep enabled the defending N.L. champs to end the 1957 season with a road record actually slightly above .500!....

Game 1: Sandy Koufax almost ends his tough season on a high note, tossing a 1-hitter against the Cubs.  But Koufax only went 5.1 innings, the one hit was a 2-run triple by Jim Rivera, and Koufax then wild-pitched Rivera across the plate before exiting the game; Cubs win 5-3 on just 3 hits.  Brooklyn's 11 hits were all singles, while the Cubs added a Bobby Gene Smith home run to Rivera's triple and Walt Moryn's single.

Game 2: A ballpark-aided slugfest, as both starters (Donovan and Newcombe) were terrible and the bullpens only a little better.  Ernie Banks, on his way to a fourth consecutive runner-up spot in the N.L. MVP race, homered twice to lead the Cubs to a 10-6 win.  Newcombe took loss #19 by allowing 14 baserunners and 9 runs in 6.1 innings, though he did fan 8 Cubbies; Donovan got a W that in no way resembled a "quality start".

Game 3: Hal Jeffcoat scattered 8 hits over 5 innings, Don Elston took a brief timeout from his undeservedly-brutal season (he promptly resumed it the next day) to register his final save as a Cub, and Frank House contributed a pinch-hit Grand Slam to Chicago's 9-2 win.

Game 4: The Cubs emptied the entire bench and scored in 7 of the 9 innings (even while stranding 11) on the way to an 8-4 win.  Nine CHN pitchers combined to allow 10 hits and just 1 walk.  Rivera & Burgess homered and super-zoid Frank Ernaga notched a pair of doubles to lead the Chicago attack.
