40,175 fans watched an exciting game at WRIGLEY FIELD. The Pittsburgh Pirates
topped the Chicago NL Cubs by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
Pittsburgh had the game winning rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs using 3
hits. Freddie Patek led off and started the rally when he stroked a
base-hit. Patek was running on the next pitch and he stole second. After an
out was recorded, Willie Stargell came to the plate and lined a one-base hit
which scored a run. A balk was called. Richie Zisk stepped into the box and
delivered a base-hit. Richie Hebner added to the rally and hit a sacrifice
fly scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago NL had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.
Jim Rooker(10-6) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Rooker
got relief help from Dave Giusti who gained credit for his 15th save. Rick
Reuschel(6-7) absorbed the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3
innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us tonight' Alan Bosslet
said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to
take.'
