Subject: Reds @ Padres

Two teams whose luck is moving in opposite directions met for 4 games, and the result makes it clear that there's every chance the N.L. West pennant will not be leaving its eternal home in the state of California.  But it might be moving a bit further south for a change....

Game 1: Don DeMola and Pete Richert traded big-time chokes, and when the dust cleared the Reds had prevailed by the score of 7-5.  Cincy spot starter Clay Carroll left in the sixth with a 4-2 lead, but Richert gave up an immediate home run to Johnny Grubb, then a couple more runs for good measure.  DeMola was not able to capitalize on his team's good fortune, though he was really done in by bad defense rather than poor pitching (a Winfield throwing error and then HAL playing idiotically long odds on a fielders "choice" play).

Game 2: Steve Hargan is notorious for first-inning meltdowns, and here was yet another one.  Hargan coughed up 3 runs despite allowing just one hit (a John Lowenstein homerun).  Not to be outdone, Bill Grief went headhunting on Earl Williams (twice; if Strat allowed brawls, we'd surely have seen one) and it cost him: the Reds tallied 4 runs in the second but spent the remainder of the day playing Strand-O-Matic.  Hargan allowed the tying run in the sixth, but Cincy took the lead on Dave Concepcion's 8th inning homer (our final hit of the day)... followed by the Reds bullpen choking a run right back.  Finally, San Diego won it in the tenth against Pedro Borbon on two singles and a walk.

Game 3: For the second straight day (and we weren't done yet) Cincy handed the home team a big first inning, and this time there was nothing resembling a comeback.  Tom Seaver was driven from the mound in disgrace during the sixth inning, having allowed 5 runs.  Ten of the 17 batters Seaver retired were due to strikeouts, but he was brutalized in between all the K's.  Meanwhile, Randy Jones was very sharp and carried a shutout into the seventh.  Final score: 5-2.  Johnny Grubb tripled & homered (his second dinger of the series and only his third round-tripper of the year).

Game 4: Another day, another costly first-inning disaster.  Dave Winfield provided his team with a quick 3-0 margin against Don Gullett and major-league ERA leader Gaylord Perry held on to win by the score of 4-2, allowing zero earned runs.  Both Cincinnati runs came in the ninth inning, but Tom House retired the final two batters to earn the save.
