Center fielder Cesar Tovar had 4 hits at BUSCH STADIUM where the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings 4 to 3.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings.  St. Louis won it in the 11th
inning.  Lou Brock slapped a base-hit.  Brock was running on the next pitch
and he stole second.  Tovar then laced a single resulting in an exciting win
for St. Louis and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.  St.
Louis finished with 15 hits in the victory.  

Mike Wallace(3-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing
no runs. Fred Beene(2-3) was the loser in relief.

Willie Stargell touched them all and had 2 RBI and Ken Brett pitched a
complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 13
to 6.

Brett(11-3) had a fairly solid outing.  He went 9 innings surrendering 11 hits
and 2 walks and served up 2 'big flies'.  Pittsburgh dominated offensively as
they scored in 6 different innings.  

The loss was charged to Clay Kirby(13-7).  He couldn't find the strike zone
and allowed 9 walks in 6 innings.

Al Oliver lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh
Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 8 to 2.

Pittsburgh jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied
3 runs on 3 hits.  That was all Jim Rooker(12-8) needed.  Pittsburgh ended up
with 12 hits for the game while St. Louis had 5.  

Mike Caldwell(5-14) took the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs
in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Manny Sanguillen had 2 base hits at BUSCH STADIUM as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 2.

St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 5th
