Subject: Reds @ Braves

After years of being denied the N.L. West pennant one way or another, the Reds hope that our 1974 version is like the Blues Brothers as far as the rest of the division is concerned: "They're not gonna catch us.  We're on a mission from God."  This series was a carbon copy of last week's road series, as Cincinnati is on top of our game for the first 3.9 contests, then chokes away the sweep in our opponents' final at bats.....

Game 1: Despite stranding 11 runners, Cincy gets a 7-2 win thanks to a strong effort from Don Gullett (16-7).  Carl Morton suffered his 19th loss of 1974 and the Atlanta runs scored on solo homers by Vic Correll & The Original ARod.  Five different Cincinnati batters (including Gullett) collected 2 hits in the balanced 12-hit attack.

Game 2: Tom Carroll's Smiley debut was about as successful as it possibly could have been (6 IP, 0 R) and he combined with Pedro Borbon on an 8-hit shutout in the 2-0 win against Buzz Capra.  Scoreless into the seventh, Dan Driessen led off with a triple and scored on Ron Santo's pinch-single with 2 outs.  Joe Morgan's RBI hit in the eighth provided a small measure of insurance.

Game 3: Don Wilson limited Atlanta to 6 hits and 1 run (unearned), but did not exactly cruise to the 5-1 win: the Braves brought the tying run to the plate with 2 outs in the ninth, and Wilson had to fan Jim Nettles to pull out the victory.  Dave Concepcion homered twice for the Reds and Joe Morgan added one of his own.

Game 4: Phil Niekro found himself down 4-0 in the third inning (having allowed just 3 hits) but stopped the bleeding once and for all at that point, and when Seaver/Richert - with a little help from the "defense" - choked up three unearned runs in the eighth, Niekro suddenly had a 5-4 win.  Max Leon saved his 15th of the year, while Seaver (because of numerous games just like this one) fell to 12-10 despite having practically the best ERA in the majors.

Alan
