My 8 Whitey Ford carried a no-hitter into the 9th inning as the New York AL Yankees defeated the struggling Boston Red Sox 3 to 1 at Fenway Park. Ford(5-2) looked very much in control throughout the night. He allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 3.38 to 3.03. The left-handed Ford lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jackie Jensen doubled with two outs in the 9th inning. Boston had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Bob Grim gained credit for his 10th save. Tom Brewer(4-4) suffered the loss. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Boston's manager after the game. 'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.' Boston brought 3 runs across the plate in the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. Sammy White led off and he lashed a single. Andy Carey came next and he tripled. Kucks then worked the squeeze play to perfection. After another out, Jim Piersall stepped in and he delivered a solo blast (his 4th of the season). That early scoring held up. Boston finished with 9 hits in the victory. The win was credited to Kucks(2-1) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. Murry Dickson(5-3) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks. The game started off with New York AL taking the lead in the first when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Yogi Berra who silenced the stadium when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 10th of the season). New York AL had 9 hits for the night. Mizell(5-3) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. The losing pitcher was Art Fowler(2-5). He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 innings.
