Subject: [SmileyList] 1974 NLCS is over

(The ALCS will begin this afternoon.)

The Cincinnati Reds used big innings against the Montreal starting pitchers to sweep the 3-game set from the Expos in a series played online on IRC.

Boxscores can be found here.

Game 1: Joe Morgan was the hero, blasting a pair of 2-run home runs off of Wilbur Wood in the first three innings which helped stake his team to an early 6-0 lead.  Tom Seaver threw a complete game 6-hitter and won by the score of 8-2.  Wood allowed all 8 runs in his 3.2 innings of work, as the Expos pen shut down the Cincinnati offense over the final 5 frames.  The Reds first four hitters in the order combined to get 8 of the 10 hits the team collected in this game.

Game 2: The Don Wilson-Frank Tanana matchup quickly turned into a slugfest: Cincy scored 5 runs in the top of the first, only to see the Expos cut the lead by 3 runs in their half of the inning.  With the score 6-5 in favor of the Reds in the sixth, Cincy tallied 4 times off reliever Chuck Taylor to take a 10-5 lead, which is how the game ended.  Buddy Bell homered and had 5 RBI for the visitors, while Ken Singleton (5 for 5 with a homerun) excelled for the home squad.

Game 3: After an off day, the series moved to Riverfront Stadium, where the Reds used a 6-run third inning against Larry Gura to clinch their first World Series berth by the score of 6-3.  Jim Perry allowed 10 hits to Montreal but pitched out of several tight spots, and Pedro Borbon retired the last 4 batters to earn a save.

Perry started the big third inning himself, when centerfielder Willie Davis misplayed his line drive into a double.  Later in the frame, a John Montague error prolonged the rally and gave Cincy the final two runs.  Ken Singleton hit another round-ripper for the 'spos, and Buddy Bell had 2 more RBI for the Reds.

A tip of the hat to the Expos for their excellent season, and thanks to Steve for playing online and to Mike T. for hosting the games on IRC.

Alan
