august 22 Phil Ortega went 8 strong innings as the Washington Senators defeated the dreadful New York AL Yankees by a score of 1 to 0 at D.C. Stadium. Ortega(12-8) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the New York AL batters. He allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk in 8 innings. New York AL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Darold Knowles recorded his 10th save. Sam McDowell(6-11) ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 4 hits and 4 walks. 'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' Billy Vanson said after the game. 'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.' Stadium where the New York AL Yankees beat the Washington Senators 4 to 0. Downing(7-15) dominated Washington hitters. He allowed just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Downing chalked up 10 strikeouts. The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score again. The losing pitcher was Barry Moore(9-8). Steve Bivens was obviously impressed with the pitching of Downing, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.' Stadium downing the Washington Senators. The score was 8 to 1. Joe Pepitone enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 15th of the season) in the 7th inning. For the game New York AL out-hit Washington 12 to 7. The victory went to Fred Talbot(7-8) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Camilo Pascual(9-14) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 runs in 3 innings of work. New York AL now has a record of 49-95. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
