If I recall, the first 3 attempts to play in Boston for the 1975 world series were rained out. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Monday, March 08, 2004 10:00 AM Subject: [SmileyList] The 1974 World Series is underway
The Cincinnati Reds have taken a 2-0 lead over the Boston Red Sox in the 1974 World Series, both games being played online. The series now moves to Fenway Park later this week. Boxscores from the first two games can be viewed here. Game 1: The Red Sox plated 2 runs on 5 hits in the first two innings against Tom Seaver, but Seaver would allow only 2 more hits, and Joe Niekro tossed two perfect innings of relief as the Reds came back to win 4-2 in 10 innings. Ross Grimsley permitted just two hits to the befuddled Cincinnati batters in 8 innings of work, but they both came in the second inning. Tony Perez led off with a single, and two outs later Jerry Grote got one of the very few good split cards we'd see today, launching a 2-run game-tying home run. Neither team scored again for quite some time; Cincy had zero opportunities to do so, but Boston was busy stranding runners galore (9 overall). Finally, with Tom Dettore on the mound in place of Grimsley, Grote got today's second good split card for the Reds and doubled with two outs in the tenth. Cesar Geronimo then sent the crowd into shock when he smacked a Dettore pitch over the rightfield wall to end the game! Game 2: It would be just the slightest exaggeration to say that Don Wilson was unhittable today: Wilson threw a 5-0 shutout, allowing just one hit (to Luis Tiant in the third inning). Joe Morgan gave the home team the lead for good with his solo home run in the first inning. The Reds then tacked on another run in the second on Earl Williams' RBI single. Tiant left after seven innings with the score 3-0, and Cincy padded the score with a couple of runs off of Diego Segui: Buddy Bell got 2 RBI when his grounder eluded Boston's drawn-in infield in the eighth. The previous lowest-hit World Series game came in 1971, when Catfish Hunter registered a 2-hitter against the Dodgers. Alan
