Subject: 1974 is officially over

The Cincinnati Reds became the first team since the 1970 Twins to compile a 7-0 postseason record, completing the sweep of the Boston Red Sox by taking games 3 and 4 in Fenway Park.

Boxscores are here.

-----------------------

Game 3: Another Fenway Classic, along the lines of Game 6 of 1975, though the fans didn't go home quite as happy after this one.  Don Gullett opposed Roger Moret, and both starters did well through the first two-thirds of regulation.  When the Reds plated 2 runs in the top of the seventh, giving the visitors a  4-1 lead at the time, Gullett was idiotically pulled by the Cincy manager in favor of one reliever (and then another) who would fail to retire a batter.

Steve Hargan gave up two hits and walked a man, then Pete Richert allowed pinch-hitter Fred Lynn to single home a run.  After Juan Beniquez hit into one of four DPs that the Reds would turn in this day, Pedro Borbon proceeded to BALK the tying run home from third base!

As the contest progressed into extra innings, both teams emptied the bullpen, with Joe Niekro & Clay Carroll combining for 4 scoreless innings for the Reds, and Paul Lindblad tossing 3 scoreless frames of his own.

The Reds blew numerous opportunities to win, stranding a total of 16 runners in 13 innings, as they outhit the Sox 16-11; each team drew 5 walks including the VERY rarely seen IW given by Cincinnati to Carlton Fisk in the 11th inning.

In the top of the 13th, the Reds pushed across the decisive run against Diego Segui when Joe Morgan doubled home Buddy Bell, who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Tom Seaver earned the relief win by pitching two innings despite still being slightly fatigued from his game one start.

-----------------------

Game 4: Jim Perry and Ross Grimsley matched up in what would be the final game of the 1974 season.  Grimsley had been nearly unhittable in his previous start, and continued his dominance in the early innings today.  However, in the third, the Reds batters finally figured him out: they scored 3 times, with Tony Perez sending the last two runs homeward with a clutch 2-out double.

The Reds made it 4-0 in the sixth, and Boston was able to tally a run (unearned) back in their half of the frame.

But the Boston bullpen, abetted by shoddy work in the field, was not able to keep the game close enough for a potential comeback.  Cincinnati scored 7 times in the last two innings, and the final score was 11-1.

Power hitting and defensive playmaking (or the lack thereof) were among the keys to the Series: the Reds had 15 extra base hits (5 homers; 2 of them by Jerry Grote, of all people) to Boston's one (a double), and the Red Sox converted only 50% of their x-plays, giving Cincy many extra opportunities to score runs.

Congrats to the Red Sox on a fine season and an impressive victory over Oakland in the ALCS, and if MLB history has any bearing on SMILEY*, these two teams just might be back here a few months from now....  :-)
