Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Pitcher Fatigue Question
Because we are (unfortunately) using the Closer rules. Warthen's Closer rating is '0.' That's the number of batters he can face before he starts risking fatigue from hits and walks. Here is the section from the SOM rules that discuss that rule: CLOSER (Located in the Options/Rules dialog) This option selects whether you do not use or use the Closer rule. The Closer rule can only be used with a team or season whose pitchers have a "closer rating." This option will cause certain relievers not rated as closers to become less effective in a closing situation. A closing situation occurs when the defensive team has the lead and the tying or winning run is on base or at the plate in the 9th inning or later. DO NOT USE CLOSER RULES This option will not use the "closer rating" found on a reliever's card. You should select this option if your league does not have closer ratings. USE CLOSER RULES This option will use the closer ratings found on relievers' cards. Only those real-life pitchers who were effective closers will excel in these situations. They will be able to last longer and be more effective in a closer situation than pitchers who were not used as closers in real-life situations. I got hit by that last year, when I tried to use Apodaca as a closer when I first took over the Mets. If it's not too late to make the proposal, I would suggest we "Do Not Use Closer Rule." I think SOM thought out the rule poorly and 1) did not take into account the changing roles of relief pitchers throughout baseball history, and 2) doesn't allow players to come up with their own usage patterns that they might think appropriate. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2004 10:29 AM Subject: [SmileyList] Pitcher Fatigue Question
