Subject: BAA@NYY - Opening Day and rest of series

Opening Day at Yankee Stadium, a beautiful day for baseball to start the 1955 season!  New Yorkers were stunned at the early action, as new Oriole Cal Abrams singled, Chuck Diering earned a walk, and a Roy Sievers ground ball was muffed by Phil Rizzuto into a single and an error.  Jim Dyck singles and the O's jump to a 2-0 lead in the 1st.  Scooter couldn't get to another grounder, and made a second error later in the game, an uncharacteristic display of nerves in front of the large crowd on hand for Opening Day.  Baltimore's Jim Wilson held the powerful Yankee offense in check all afternoon.  He scattered 6 hits in 8 innings, all singles except for a Hank Bauer homer that accounted for NY's only run.  4-1 O's final.

The Bronx Bombers lived up to their name in the second game, pounding Sal Maglie on their way to a 6-3 victory.  The Barber only allowed 5 hits, but 3 were for home runs (Mantle, Berra, Skowron).  Johnny Groth added another homer off of George Zuverink in the 9th. Bob Turley gets the win.

NY's starter in the final game, Tommy Byrne, walked the first three hitters he faced, but was able to get out of the jam with some able fielding by his teammates.  Shockingly, in the third inning, he walked all three batters again  (Abrams, Diering, Sievers)!  This time, Baltimore capitalized, putting up a 4-spot to take a 4-0 lead.  10 walks issued by Yankees pitchers and another key error from Rizzuto contributed to Baltimore running up an 8-0 lead after five innings.  Erv Palica was on fire, only allowing two hits through 6 innings, but then the 7th inning came.  The Yanks put together 8 runs in that frame, including a Mickey Mantle grand slam.   On and on the teams battled, until the bottom of the 11th.  The Yanks were able to load the bases off of control problems by the O's, and a walk-off walk was finally earned by Joe Collins.  20 walks issued on the day by both teams combined.  Both managers were displeased with the umpiring in this one!

Pat
