Subject: BAA at DET - Al Kaline puts on a series to remember!

Detroit's Bob Nieman did the damage in the first game, cracking open a 1-1 game with a 3 run blast in the 6th inning.  Nieman finished with all 5 Detroit RBIs, Al Kaline was 4 for 4, and Billy Hoeft only allowed 2 hits through 8 innings in a 5-1 Tiger win.

O's cruising along into the bottom of the 9th win a 5-3 lead. Bob Feller had snuffed out a Tiger rally in the 8th, and Baltimore was looking to wrap this one up behind the big right-handed closer.  However, the Tigers had different thoughts.  Eddie Mathews led off with a HR, Al Kaline and Jerry Lynch singled, and then Bob Speake tripled to give Detroit the come-from-behind victory.  Al Kaline went 5 for 5, giving "Mr. Tiger" 9 straight base hits this series!!!!  Al is hitting a rather robust .473 for the year.

O's get homers from Roy Sievers and Dale Long in the first to take a quick 3-0 lead.  However, the amazing Al Kaline stroked a home run, his 10 consecutive hit, to close the gap to 3-2. The power continues for Baltimore, as even little Willie Miranda gets a homer.  Up to 7-2 Baltimore.  ESPN crews go to a nationwide feed as Al Kaline comes up.  "You are looking live as Al Kaline steps to the plate in the 4th.  Ed Lopat sets, delivers, and Kaline shots a line drive, base hit, his 11th in row!!!  One more and he will tie the real-life record of 12 straight base hits, held by Pinky Higgins and Walt Dropo".  We move ahead to the 6th inning, still 7-2 Baltimore, and Kaline steps up.  Jon Miller with the call "Here's Al Kaline, 11 straight hits, 1 on, 1 out.  Ed Lopat, only allowed 4 hits all night, 3 to Mr. Kaline.  Kicks, delivers a fastball down low, Kaline swings and drills one into centerfield, another base hit. Move over Pinky and Walt, 12 HITS IN A ROW FOR AL KALINE!!!!"  Dale Long gets another homer to make it 9-4, but look out, Detroit gets 2 on board in their half of the 7th and look who's up, Al Kaline!  Baltimore brings in Sam Jones to give Al a little different look.  It works, as Al strikes out and ends the amazing streak.  Incredibly fun to play this, Al was my first baseball hero, growing up in Detroit and following baseball in the early 70's.  He would get one more at bat on the night, but lined out to short.  O's take the finale 9-4
