Game
1 First baseman Willie
Stargell had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the red-hot
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos in 10 innings 4 to
3. Both teams were tied
at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Pittsburgh pulled the
game out in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Leroy Stanton
slapped a one-base hit. Stanton then stole second base.
After another out, Bob Robertson came to the plate and slapped a single
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Pittsburgh and the 36,311 home town
fans in attendance. For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal 14 to
9. The victory went to
Gene Garber (1-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Dale Murray (1-3)
absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
and surrendered 2 hits and no walks. Game
2 Bruce Kison
delivered 7 solid innings as the streaking Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Montreal Expos by a score of 4 to 1 at Three
Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh came
through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning with 3 runs using 3
hits. Manny Sanguillen led off and keyed the rally when he lined a
one-base hit. Willie Stargell stepped into the batter's box and
he laced a single. Two outs later Richie Hebner stepped in and he
belted a three-run homer (his 5th of the season). Pittsburgh finished
with 8 hits while Montreal ended up with 3. Bob Moose (1-0) went
2 innings allowing no runs for the win. The losing pitcher was Chuck Taylor
(0-2) in relief. Pittsburgh added another win to their now very
impressive winning streak. Game
3 Jerry Reuss had a
strong outing as the sizzling Pittsburgh Pirates pulled out a win over the
Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 1 at Three
Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh scored
the deciding run in the 9th inning. Bob Robertson delivered a
single. Manny Sanguillen stepped into the batter's box and he lashed
a single. Willie Stargell then drew a walk to load the bases.
Richie Zisk followed and he grounded into a double play. Dave Parker
came to the plate and laced a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for
Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Pittsburgh ended up with 6 hits for the game while Montreal had 2.
The victory was
credited to Gene Garber (2-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Dennis
Blair (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 2
hits without retiring a batter. Game 4
John Candelaria took
a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the streaking Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
the Montreal Expos 3 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium. Candelaria (3-1)
looked very much in control throughout the day. He allowed just 2 hits
and 2 walks in 7 innings improving his ERA from 2.88 to 2.53. The left-handed
Candelaria lost his chance for a no-hitter when Gary Carter doubled with
nobody out in the 7th inning. The game was a scoreless duel until the
7th inning. Candelaria got
relief help from Gene Garber who gained credit for his 2nd save. Steve
Rogers (5-3) took the loss. This win by Pittsburgh continues their
recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record
of 10-0. For the season, they are a division leading 23-16. With
this loss, Montreal has a 3-7 record of late, 20-19
overall. |
