Subject: Reds @ Cubs
Just when it looked like the Reds would play another entire series with no breaks (and why not - we played the first 17 innings without any), and would be settling for another typical Cincy road performance of late, the Reds stage a big ninth inning comeback in game 2 and hold on to win game 3. Game 1: The ever-feeble Cincinnati offense could manage nothing against Bert Blyleven (7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER), and two swings of the Cubbie bats gave the home team a 3-2 victory. Don Gullett allowed just 3 hits in his 7 innings of work, but two bad pitches left the field in a hurry. In the Cincy ninth, the Reds pushed across one run and had a pair of runners in scoring position when first baseman Dave '4e20' Kingman smoothly scooped up an x-grounder to end the game. On a related note, the Cincy fielders were generally butchers (especially those two stone-gloves Morgan & Concepcion), as the Reds converted x-chances at a rate over 100 points below our season average in this series. Game 2: Down 1-0 early, the Reds batters showed a little life, plating a pair of runs in the second, but a bases-loaded GIDP would end the inning and foreshadow Cincy's ineptitude to come. The Cubs would score a run on a two-out wild pitch, tally two unearned runs thanks to Joe Morgan, and took a 5-2 lead into the ninth. However, Ken Griffey and Dan Driessen came up with ribbies (Driessen tallied a couple with a two-out double to tie the contest), and the visitors won it in the 11th when Jerry Grote scored on Fred Scherman's wild pitch (how ironic). Game 3: The Reds spotted Tom Seaver an early 4-0 lead, and you know THAT usually means trouble. For the Reds. Seaver lasted until the eighth, when Dave Kingman launched a 2-run bomb that made the score 5-3. And that's how it ended, thanks to some good relief work from Rawly Eastwick, who retired all 4 batters that he faced. Cesar Geronimo homered and collected 3 RBI for Cincinnati. Alan |
