Catcher Yogi Berra homered and had 3 RBI as the New York AL Yankees defeated
the Detroit Tigers 8 to 2 at Briggs Stadium.
New York AL won the game with a run in the 8th inning.  Chico Carrasquel
singled.  Berra was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out.  Mickey
Mantle then doubled.  Johnny Groth came up and he was walked intentionally to
load the bases.  One out later, Hank Bauer came up and he laced a one-base
hit.  New York AL finished with 14 hits while Detroit ended up with 7.
Whitey Ford(5-5) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Don Mossi(2-3)
absorbed the loss in relief.  He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 2
innings.

Eddie Mathews touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated
the New York AL Yankees by the score of 10 to 6 at Briggs Stadium.
Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th
inning when they scored 5 runs on 4 hits.  The key offensive moment was
provided by Mathews who thrilled the crowd when he lofted a three-run
'big-fly' (his 16th of the season).  Detroit had 13 hits for the night.
The victory was credited to Don Mossi(3-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Mossi got relief help from Ray Narleski who gained credit for
his 12th save.  The loss was charged to Don Larsen(0-2) in relief.  He gave
up 3 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

First baseman Bob Speake jacked one out of the ballyard at Briggs Stadium
where the Detroit Tigers beat the New York AL Yankees by the score of 6 to
5.
Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning plating an isolated run
on 2 hits.  New York AL threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Virgil Trucks(5-4) got the win allowing no runs in 7 innings. Trucks was
helped out by Ray Narleski who recorded his 13th save.  Bob Turley(8-2) was
charged with the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks
in 6 innings.
'We lose our concentration for one pitch, and we lose the game.' New York AL's
manager said after the game.  'Maybe now these guys will listen when I say
they have to concentrate on EVERY pitch.'
