MAY 15 Catcher Yogi Berra homered and had 3 RBI as the New York AL Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers 8 to 2 at Briggs Stadium. New York AL won the game with a run in the 8th inning. Chico Carrasquel singled. Berra was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Mickey Mantle then doubled. Johnny Groth came up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. One out later, Hank Bauer came up and he laced a one-base hit. New York AL finished with 14 hits while Detroit ended up with 7. Whitey Ford(5-5) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Don Mossi(2-3) absorbed the loss in relief. He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings. Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning when they scored 5 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Mathews who thrilled the crowd when he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 16th of the season). Detroit had 13 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Don Mossi(3-3) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run. Mossi got relief help from Ray Narleski who gained credit for his 12th save. The loss was charged to Don Larsen(0-2) in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.
