Subject: Reds @ Braves
If you like close, low-scoring games, the Reds are the team for you. We can't buy a clutch hit (or even a HIT, most of the time), but neither can our opponents. No team ever deserved a series sweep LESS than the team that somehow got one here.... Game 1: Buzz Capra's bid to become Johnny Vander Meer ended with the first batter he faced: Pete Rose laced one into the gap and stretched the triple into an inside-the-park homer - the first of two IPHRs for Cincy in this series. Three batters later, Tony Perez launched a more conventional home run, and from that point the Cincy offense lapsed back into our typical coma for a while. Capra got tough, Hargan gave the Braves a run back in the bottom of the first and another in the fifth. Atlanta had the game won with two outs in the ninth, but Bobby Darwin (whose low-probability triple had tied the contest in the fifth) was gunned at the plate to end the inning. Concepcion singled Geronimo home with the winning run off of Joe Niekro in the Cincinnati tenth. Joe didn't fare too well against his ex-mates in these games. Game 2: Phil Niekro once again got no support (now 1-10 with a 3.28 ERA), allowing just 1 run in 7 innings, but taking the tough loss. Gary Nolan threw 7 shutout innings, and an unearned run (Brother Joe again on the mound) in the 8th was the difference in Cincy's 2-1 win. The Braves outhit the visitors for the second straight game. Game 3: Dave Goltz went the distance and the Reds came from behind to win by the score of 4-2. Two home runs in Cincy's 3-run fifth (Rose & Herrmann) completed the scoring for the day. Game 4: Tom Walker had a nice game going (and a 1-0 lead) until the seventh, when the Reds turned 4 hits and a walk into 3 runs and went on to win 4-1. Don Gullett hung around just long enough to collect the W and Dave LaRoche staggered his way to save #8. Ken Griffey inside-the-parked one in the 8th, and Rod Gilbreath homered (but also committed 2 errors) for the Braves. Atlanta had a threat going in the ninth thanks to LaRoche's wildness, but Dave Cash pulled off a $ choke to end the game. Alan |
