Subject: Reds @ Giants
Our batters' Massive Underachievement notwithstanding, the Reds sometimes seem as incapable of losing a road game, as we are of winning a home game. This series wasn't much of an exception to that rule, although the contests were higher scoring than usual.... Game 1: As so often happens, the Reds took a big lead in the early frames (4-0 after half an inning) then shut down the offense completely (how polite of us) and waited patiently for our opponent to roar back. And so it was today, with the score becoming knotted at 5 after 7 innings. Just as both teams were trying to imagine what a clutch hit looked like (22 combined LOB), John Montefusco ran out of steam, Gary Lavelle fared no better, and the Reds were able to convert 2 walks and 4 hits into 4 eighth inning runs and a 9-5 win. Rawly Eastwick followed 3 ineffective Cincy pitchers to the mound, and got the relief win. Game 2: Another early outburst (6-0 in the second) for the Reds allowed Don Gullett to cruise through 6 scoreless innings, but the bullpen did their best to narrow the gap and Cincy had to hold on for an 8-3 win. Tony Perez provided most of the winning margin with a second-inning grand slam. The teams again combined for a ton of LOB (20). Game 3: The Reds offense had runners galore once more (most of them LOB, naturally) and Gary Nolan tossed 7 shutout innings in the 7-1 victory over Fritz Peterson. As usual, Cincy burst out of the gate with 3 runs in the first. Jerry Martin doubled and stole a base, collected 3 hits altogether, and is now batting .317. Game 4: Doug Flynn had 3 hits for the Reds, raising his average 55 points (to .146) in one game, but despite this Herculean effort the Giants prevailed by the score of 5-2. SF managed just 5 hits on the day against Dave McNally, who was making his N.L. debut due to the fact that neither Tom Seaver not Dave Goltz could be located. Charlie Spikes' homer led off what would become a 3-run fifth for the home team, which sealed the game. Alan |
