Ron Cey hit for the cycle and Burt Hooton pitched 7 strong innings at Fulton
Cnty. Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the pitiful Atlanta Braves 4 to
3.

Los Angeles had the game winning rally in the top of the 8th inning with 2
runs using 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Steve Garvey kicked off the
action when he blasted a solo shot (his 5th of the season).  Cey came next
and he tripled.  Gary Matthews then hit a deep fly scoring the final run of
the inning.  Atlanta had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Hooton(7-5) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Hooton got relief help
from Dick Drago who gained credit for his 5th save.  Mike Beard(0-5) was the
losing pitcher in relief.  He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 3
runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Johnny Oates had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Fulton Cnty. Stadium as the Los
Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 7 to 6.

In the 7th inning Los Angeles scored 3 runs with the help of 4 hits.  They
would be enough to earn the win.  Atlanta threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.

Mickey Scott(2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Scott got relief
help from Al Downing who gained credit for his 1st save.  Joe Niekro(2-4)
suffered the loss in relief.

Billy Vanson was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

First baseman Steve Garvey had 2 base hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated
the pitiful Atlanta Braves by a score of 5 to 4 at Fulton Cnty. Stadium.

In the 7th inning Los Angeles scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits.  After an
out was recorded, Roger Metzger began the rally when he lashed a single.
Garvey came next and he laced a single.  Ron Cey was a strikeout victim,
unable to help out.  John Hale came up and he laced a one-base hit, and an
error was also committed, which scored a run.  Jim Wynn came to the plate and
was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Gary Matthews added to the
outburst and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning.  Atlanta had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

The winning pitcher was Andy Messersmith(9-6) who allowed 4 runs in 6 and 2/3
innings. Grant Jackson got the save, his 9th.  Max Leon(1-1) was the losing
pitcher in relief.  By giving up 2 runs in 2 innings his ERA increased from
3.13 to 3.48.

'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it
was nothing.' Messersmith said.  'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't
put the ball where I wanted it.'
