Subject: Cards take 3 of 4 from Mets

Game 1: Mets jump out to a 7-2 lead, then throw it all away falling behind 13-8.  Then pull within 1 and leave the bases loaded in the 9th.

Game 2: Mets rally for 3 in the 9th - then Apodaca almost gives it back in the bottom of the frame.

Game 3: Apodaca blows the save in the 9th

Game 4: A 12 inning war of attrition ends with Apodaca's second consecutive loss.

Reggie Smith cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated
the New York NL Mets by a score of 13 to 12 at Busch Stadium.

The St. Louis fans enjoyed the offense provided by Smith.  He cleared the
fences for a two-run home run (his 13th of the season) in the 3rd inning,
doubled in the 4th inning and singled in the 5th inning.  St. Louis lit up
the scoreboard in the 4th inning when they had 6 runs on 8 hits.  New York NL
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Jim Crawford(4-1) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 and 1/3 innings. Crawford
got help from Mike Garman who earned his 6th save.  Ray Bare(4-3) was the
losing pitcher.  He got hit hard, allowing 15 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3
innings.

Derek Jones was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

In a great finish the New York NL Mets came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 2 at Busch
Stadium.

New York NL had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs
using 4 hits.  After two were out Rusty Staub got things rolling when he
singled.  Johnny Bench next to the plate and he delivered a one-base hit.
Billy Williams then slapped a single, and an error was also committed,
driving home two runs.  Mike Vail came up and he lined a base-hit scoring the
final run of the inning.  The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until
the 8th inning.

Bob Apodaca(2-3) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 and 1/3 innings. Rich
Hinton recorded his 2nd save.  Ron Reed(3-8) was the loser.  Reed was feeling
apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away.  What a
miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans.  One minute things are
looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I get a chance to
redeem myself real soon!'

Reggie Smith collected 2 extra-base hits at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis
Cardinals beat the New York NL Mets 4 to 3.

St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
with 3 runs on 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Tito Fuentes keyed the
rally when he smacked a single.  Ted Simmons followed and he drew a walk.
Smith then slapped a one-base hit to load the bases.  Ken Reitz came up and
he would ground out which scored a run.  Luis Melendez stepped into the box
and lined a single as two more runners crossed the plate.  The New York NL
bats were silent in the 9th.

The win was credited to Jim Crawford(5-1) who went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing
1 run. Bob Apodaca(2-4) took the loss in relief.  The St. Louis ballclub's
record now stands at 31-35.  New York NL has a record of 35-34 after the
