Subject: Giants take 2 of 3 from Mets at the Stick

The Mets bullpen blows the first two games.  Jose Cruz hits a pinch-hit grand slam in game 1 to put the Mets ahead, but Rich Hinton and Bob Apodaca throw the lead away.  Skip Lockwood and Apodaca again man the gas cans in game 2.  Jon Matlack realizes the way to win is not to give the bullpen a chance to lose it and spins a 2-hitter to salvage game 3.

CM to follow later in the week.

Jon Matlack pitched a 2 hit shutout and Rusty Staub had 2 base hits and 2 RBI
as the New York NL Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 7 to
0 at Candlestick Park.

Matlack(7-9) was on top of his game.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 2 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  New York NL had 11 hits for the
afternoon.

Roric Harrison(0-3) was the losing pitcher.  Bob Mittleman lamented, 'Matlack
was really aggressive today.  He kept coming after our hitters.  Heck, why
not. he kept sitting our guys down one after another - like so many bowling
pins!'
