july 18 At Three Rivers Stadium the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 5. Steve Garvey was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He ripped a base-knock bringing in a run in the 1st inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 10th of the season) in the 2nd inning. Los Angeles banged out 11 on the night. The victory was credited to Rick Rhoden(4-6) who went 2 innings, allowing 1 run. Gene Garber(5-3) was charged with the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 3 innings of work. The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Jim Fregosi led off and keyed the rally when he slapped a one-base hit. Al Oliver stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Rennie Stennett then laid down a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Willie Stargell stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk to load the bases. Manny Sanguillen came to the plate and laced a single which was good for two runs. Los Angeles made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. The victory went to Bob Moose(3-5) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no runs. Dave Giusti earned the save, his 19th. Dick Drago(1-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 2 walks in 1 inning. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Billy Vanson 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
