Subject: Reds @ Cubs

Same old story: Reds get "lucky" to salvage a split against an inspired home opponent.  Three of the four games were not close, but the one which was close was perhaps the quintessential example of Cincy's eternal clutch futility....

Game 1: The Cubs compile 10 hits and 8 walks and destroy the Reds by the score of 5-1 despite stranding 13 runners.  Bert Blyleven & Fred Scherman combined on a 4-hitter against the enfeebled Cincinnati offense, the shutout blemished only by a Dan Driessen solo homer in the fourth.  Chicago scored 4 times in the first inning against Stan Bahnsen and cruised home from there.

Game 2: Today it was the Reds scoring 4 times in the first, but to nobody's surprise we gave 3 of them right back in the bottom of the inning.  However, that was just about all the offense the Cubs would get, while the Reds arose from the dead and banged out 15 hits in the 10-4 victory.  Don Gullett, the Reds most schizophrenic starter, pitched decently enough after the first few batters while Bill Bonham was dispatched from the mound before the second inning was complete.

Game 4: Tom Seaver lacked his "A" game today, but survived to win his 23rd game of 1975.  Rick Reuschel notched his 20th loss for the Cubs in the 9-1 final.  The score was just 4-1 after seven innings, but the Reds tacked on 5 runs against Fred Scherman to give the illusion of an easy contest.

-------------------------

Game 3:

Gary Nolan and Ray Burris were the starters.  When the Reds stranded the maximum in the first inning, we had no idea we were going to have a record-setting day.

The game remained scoreless until the Reds tallied an unearned run in the fifth.  That lead lasted several microseconds, and the Cubs were up 2-1 just a few batters later.  It could have been worse: the inning ended when Jerry Grote successfully blocked the plate for the second out, then gunned Bill Madlock trying to steal for the third out.

The Reds tied the game in the seventh when pinch-hitter Joe Morgan drew a two-out bases-loaded walk, but the side was retired with the bases still full.  Cincy got two runners on base with nobody out in the 8th, but they never got a whiff of home plate.

A leadoff home run by Pete Rose in the tenth gave the Reds another quickly-evaporating lead.  Down to their final out, the Cubs tied the game.  Dave LaRoche got Darrell Evans to leave the bases loaded, but it only delayed the inevitable for one more inning.

In the 11th the Reds once again got 2 on with 0 out and once again stranded 3 runners.  New pitcher Steve Hargan faced two batters in the bottom of the frame, retired neither, and it was 'game over' when Jerry Morales hit one over the left field wall.

Final score: 5-3.  The Reds received 24 baserunners, plated 3 of them, had one CS, and stranded TWENTY.
