Ray Bare tossed a complete game shutout as the pathetic Atlanta Braves were
badly beaten by the New York NL Mets, 15 to 0.

Joe Torre provided much of the offense.  He hit a single which was good for
two runs in the 7th inning, singled in the 8th inning and tripled clearing
all three ducks off the pond. in the 9th inning.  New York NL provided plenty
of action in the 7th inning when they had 9 runs on 6 hits and the 9th inning
when they had 5 runs on 4 hits.  New York NL banged out 14 on the night.

Bare(8-9) was credited with the shutout. The loss was charged to Phil
Niekro(6-19).  He gave up 8 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings of work.

In a game for the baseball purist, Carl Morton(13-13) and Mickey Lolich(11-14)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Atlanta Braves finally emerged
victorious over New York NL Mets, 1 to 0.

The game's only run was scored in the bottom of the 4th inning.  New York NL
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Charlie Hough earned his 19th save.  'I just wanted to give my team a chance
to win.' said Morton, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the
game, and that's all that matters.'
