Subject: Mets split with Cardinals

We lose game 2 on a walk-off, come-from-behind home run in the 14th, and game 4 ends with Jerry Remy getting thrown out at the plate on a 1-19.  CM will come later as I have usage concerns.

pitching duel at Busch Stadium.  The New York NL Mets eventually emerged as
victors over the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 3 to 1.

St. Louis was unable to recover after New York NL went ahead in the top of the

with 9 hits.

Bob Apodaca recorded the save, his 25th.  'I just wanted to give my team a

WEB GEMS- Top 11th: Ken Reitz robbed Dick Sharon of a base hit.

Right fielder Reggie Smith had 3 base hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the
New York NL Mets in 14 innings by a score of 7 to 6.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings.  St. Louis ended up
winning it in the 14th inning.  Smith led off the inning for St. Louis when
he drew a walk.  Ken Reitz stepped into the batter's box and he bombed a
two-run dinger (his 7th of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for
St. Louis and the 39,667 home town fans in attendance.  A wild affair, this
game saw the lead change 5 times.

Greg Terlecky(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. The loss was
charged to Skip Lockwood(4-2) in relief.  He surrendered 2 runs in 1 inning
and saw his ERA increase from 2.52 to 2.82.

Skip Lockwood was great in relief and first baseman Keith Hernandez homered
and had 2 RBI as the New York NL Mets topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a
score of 7 to 6 at Busch Stadium.

New York NL set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run.
Ray Bare(9-9) got relief help from Lockwood who was excellent in relief and
gained credit for his 2nd save.

John Denny(3-3) was tagged with the loss. He was not very effective,
surrendering 7 runs in 4 innings.  'I always am most impressed when a pitcher
finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Jon Fellows said after the
game.  'Bare did not have command of his pitches most of the night, but he
proved he really knew how to pitch!'
