Subject: Reds @ Mets

After weeks of malaise, the Reds do what must be done to salvage even a small chance at a pennant, and sweep the Mets @ Shea Stadium.  We tried mightily to give at least two of these games away, but were fortunately unsuccessful at doing so....

Game 1: Starters Gary Nolan and Craig Swan combined to allow 2 runs in 13 IP.  Cincy broke on top in the fifth when Ed Herrmann, perhaps the slowest player in the majors, became a daredevil on the basepaths and tried to score from third base (50% chance) on Gary Nolan's weak grounder - and made it!  Johnny Bench then tied the game in the seventh on a two-out solo homer.  Finally, in the 12th inning, an error, a couple of walks, and a clutch single by Cesar Geronimo gave the Reds a 3-1 lead.  Dick Sharon homered in the bottom of the inning, but the game ended with the score 3-2.  How did this game make it to the 12th in the first place?  LOB: CIN - 13, NYN - 5.

Game 2: Dave Goltz was handed an early 4-0 lead, gave 100% of it back in the middle frames, but the Reds got to the NYN bullpen for 4 more runs in the seventh & eighth innings and held on to win 8-5.  The teams combined for 15 hits, all singles.

Game 3: Cincy scored 3 in the first against Mike Caldwell, got nothing else during regulation but for a while it didn't look like we needed any more.  Winning 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Dave LaRoche found himself in a 1-out, runners on 1st & 2nd situation.  Jack Heidemann proceeded to hit a gb(2B)X to Joe Morgan - this is a DP, game over, right?  Wrong.  How about a nice 2-base error instead?  One run scored on the play and the game was tied seconds later when Jerry Remy singled.  Doug Flynn came through with a 2-out pinch-double for the Reds in the 11th, and we stay alive to play one more day.

Game 4: Tom Seaver was given an early 5-0 (all 5 RBI on a pair of George Foster home runs), and LOOKED like he wanted to donate it all to charity, but didn't.  The Reds ended up allowing 11 hits, but just 1 run, and for once the offense was efficient as we turned our 11 hits into 9 runs.  Mickey Lolich took the loss for New York.
