Subject: Expos sweep Mets to keep NL East race tight

Game 1: Mike Schmidt hits two homers to provide all the Expos’ runs in the 3-2 win.

Game 2: Frank Tanana hurls a NO-HITTER and Schmidt hits another home run.  Mets lose their 10th straight.

Game 3:  Mike Jorgensen’s 3-run home run is decisive blow.  Mets’ 9th inning rally is too little too late.

Game 4:  Schmidt doubles twice as Expos complete sweep.  Mets prove even-handed in NL East race as they lose their last 12 games of the season.

Steve:  Kuiper has 2 PA left.

WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Duane Kuiper robbed Rusty Staub of a base hit.

History was made in Montreal as Frank Tanana(22-8) tossed a no-hitter and the
Montreal Expos defeated the reeling New York NL Mets by the score of 6 to
0.

Tanana had an evening to remember.  Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What a
game at Jarry Park! He walked 3 New York NL batters.  The Montreal players
and coaches started to leave Tanana alone with his thoughts after the game
reached the 7th inning.  By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could
hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after
every out.  Tanana whiffed an impressive total of 14 New York NL batters.
The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score
again.

Tom Griffin(0-2) absorbed the loss.  He was knocked around, surrendering 6
runs in 4 innings.  When asked how his stuff was out there, Tanana looked a
bit incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied 'A bit better than
average, I'd have to say'

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Johnny Bench blocked the plate, saving a run!

In a close game the Montreal Expos got by the slumping New York NL Mets by the
score of 6 to 4.

Montreal brought 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning when
they had 3 base hits.  That early run support was enough for Larry
Christenson(14-11) and Montreal.  Montreal won despite being out-hit by New
York NL 13 hits to 10.

Dan Warthen earned the save, his 34th.  Mickey Lolich(13-18) suffered the
loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 6 hits and 3 walks in
3 innings.
