Baltimore gets blanked again in the first game, this time by Bob Turley in a fine 4-hit performance. Sal Maglie was ineffective again, and Washington puts up 4 runs early, allowing them to coast to a 4-0 victory. Larry Doby and Del Ennis walloped back-to-back homers to lead off the 5th inning, earning Maglie the early shower. Baltimore was able to build a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 9th of the second game. Closer Bruce Greenwood got dangerous Jim Finigan and Del Ennis quickly, but with two down, the "Earl of Snohomish" Earl Torgeson rolled a HR 1-9 count and pulled a 9 out to tie the game up. These two teams rapped out a combined 26 hits in 9 innings, but could only piece together 3 runs a piece, so we prepared for a long session of extra-innings. Two uneventful innings passed and we move up to the 12th inning. Willie Miranda and Chico Garcia got aboard, and with two down, pinch-hitter Ray Katt had a 'clutch hit' single combined with Del Ennis throwing error to bring in two for Baltimore. The Earl and Danny O'Connell led off the bottom of the 12th by getting aboard, but then Bill Sarni hit into a double play and Jack Littrell grounded out to end an exciting one 5-3 Baltimore. Danny Schell went 4 for 5 and Cal Abrams 3 for 6 for the O's, while the Earl of Snohomish went 4 for 5 and Jim Finigan and Joe Tipton added 3 hits each for Washington. Both teams left 14 runners on base. A much more routine game in game 3, as Baltimore's starter (Duane Pillette, in this case) gets shelled early while the opponent's starter (Bob "Porterhouse" Porterfield) is dominating the punchless O's offense. 6-2 Sens win. Porterfield had a two-hitter through 7 innings, before Baltimore broke through for a couple runs in the 8th. Washington jumps out to an early 7-2 lead after three innings and never looks back. 8-3 Sens in the finale. Jim Finigan was 3 for 5 and Ron Jackson hit a three run dinger for Washington. Mickey McDermott picks up his first win of 1954 with a fine outing, only allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run through 8 innings. Must note that slugger Roy Sievers, the heart of the Baltimore offense all these years, is mired in the worst start of his career. Roy, after three complete weeks and 74 at bats, is hitting just .135 with 0 home runs and just 10 rbis. His OPS, a respectable .783 in real life, is just .437. With the Law of Averages on our side, Baltimore is looking forward to a 'market correction' of sorts!
