Subject: Braves '76 Opener in Pittsburgh

Atlanta, coming off 3 consecutive 100 loss seasons,
comes into the spring of '76 with higher hopes than
any season in a long time. This 4 game series in
Pittsburgh did nothing but encourage those hopes.

Game 1: Rowland Office 2 run double keyed a 3 run
rally in the 9th that started the season on a great
note for the Braves. Rico Carty's ground ball scored
Office moments later with what proved to be the
winning run. mike Marshall got the win out of teh
bullpen and Charlie Hough picked up his 1st save of
the season. 4-3 Braves.

Game 2: We haven't had one of these in tears: a Braves
blowout at the expense of another team. Phil Niekro
set the pace, throwing a 6 hit shutout. The Braves
offense exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits. Rico Carty
led the way with 3 hits and 4 rbi. Willie Davis
pitched in with 3 hits and a couple of runs. Rookie
Dale Murphy got into his first game as an Atlanta
Brave. He struggled some behind the plate, but had 2
hits, scored a run and knocked in a run. The kids got
a future if we can find him a position. 12-0 Braves.

Game 3: Carl Morton got knocked around for 12 hits
over his 4 innings and the Pirates stormed back with
an impressive victory, giving them a chande to even up
the series in game 4. Willie Stargell and Richie Zisk
homered for the Bucs, and Al Oliver went 5-5. The
Candy Man, John Candelaria, threw 7 decent innings to
start his season off nicely with a win. 7-4 Pirates.

Game 4: Gary Ross and Jerry Reuss dueled to a 1-1 tie
for 8 innings. Ross was rewarded for his fine outing
when the Braves rallied for 2 runs in the top of the
9th. Ruess had already been pulled and the runs came
off of Hernandez. Aurelio Rodriguez (A-Rod) tripled in
the go ahead run and Don Kessinger doubled him home.
Charlie Hough finished off the Pirates without problem
in the bottom of the 9th for his 2nd save. 3-1
Atlanta.

Let's see if the Braves can ride a little hot streak
here at the beginning of the season. Sure would be fun
for a change.
