Johnny Bench ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Steve Carlton shutout St.
Louis while allowing the New York NL bullpen a day-off at Busch Stadium where
the New York NL Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 0.

The St. Louis fans didn't appreciate the big day Bench had.  He blasted a solo
shot in the 2nd inning, laced a one-base hit in the 4th inning, lashed a
single in the 6th inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 2nd of the
season) in the 9th inning.  New York NL had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Carlton(1-0) was credited with the shutout. John Denny(0-1) absorbed the loss.
'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Bench said 'next
time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'
