One run was the difference at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated
the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 to 2.

Rick Reuschel(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Reuschel.  He
went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 4 hits and 3 walks.  Tippy Martinez was
great in relief and recorded his 1st save.  

John Candelaria(0-1) was given the loss.  It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 5 innings of work.

Jerry Reuss pitched 5 strong innings and right fielder Dave Parker cracked a
homer and had 3 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the
Chicago NL Cubs 6 to 3.

Pittsburgh jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring 3 runs
using 5 hits.  Al Oliver started the inning off right when he stroked a
one-base hit.  Freddie Patek stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice
bunt.  Parker then bombed a two-run dinger (his 1st of the season).  Willie
Stargell stepped in and he doubled.  Richie Zisk came to the plate and
doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  Pittsburgh had 15 hits overall,
while Chicago NL had 7.  

Reuss(1-0) allowed 1 run in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Gene Garber
gained credit for his 1st save.  Ray Burris(0-1) was charged with the loss.
He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 3 innings.

Jim Rooker pitched 6 strong innings and Richie Hebner cracked a homer at

Pittsburgh brought 4 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning with the help of
4 hits.  That was all Rooker(1-0) needed.  Chicago NL had a chance to come
back in the 9th but they came up short.
