Subject: Cubs @ Reds
The Cubs rebound from a brutal home performance with a competent road series; a good week across the board is out of the question for this hapless squad.... Game 1: CHN hurlers immediately demonstrated that they are not up to the task of working in this Pitchers' Hell of a ballpark, but the hitters seemed to enjoy it. Both teams displayed terrible defense today, but the Cubs made the most of it by scoring 7 unearned runs on the way to a 12-8 win. Duke Snider had 4 hits totaling 12 bases for the Reds, but Hank Sauer offset that with a pair of homers & 5 RBI for the Cubs. Game 2: The lowest-scoring contest of the series, in which CHN starter Ted Gray actually pitched well (6 IP, 2 ER) but 4 critical GIDPs squelched every attempted Cubs rally and the Reds won by the score of 6-2. There were no gophers allowed today by either side, and 19 of the 21 combined hits were singles. Game 3: You'd think a pitcher named "Hal" would get occasional mercy from the dice & split cards, but apparently not if he pitches for the Cubs. Hal Jeffcoat was destroyed in every possible way, while "Corky" Valentine shut down the Chicago offense and a 4e88 at shortstop for the Reds made numerous plays the likes of which Ozzie Smith can only dream of. Final score: 9-5. Game 4: The Cubbie defense was in especially horrendous form, and starter Dick Cole was not able to endure that burden along with his own lousy pitching. But an unlikely 9th inning comeback by the visitors tied the game 9-9 and a rally of singles and walks in the 11th allowed the Cubs to escape with an 11-9 win and a series split. Alan |
