46,934 fans were treated to a fine game at Candlestick Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Los Angeles Dodgers won by the
slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. Finally, Los Angeles pulled the
game out in the 11th inning.  Roger Metzger led off and keyed the rally when
he drew a walk.  Gary Matthews stepped up next and he drew a walk.  Two outs
later Steve Garvey came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the
bases.  Dusty Baker was up next and he delivered a single driving home two
runs.  Baker took second on the throw.  Los Angeles rapped out 11 hits for
the night.

Steve Dunning(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Dunning got relief help from Stan Wall who gained credit for his 2nd save.
Gary Lavelle(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.  He had trouble throwing
strikes and issued 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Burt Hooton(2-0) and Jim Barr(0-2) treated the San Francisco fans to a fine
pitching duel at Candlestick Park.  The Los Angeles Dodgers eventually
emerged as victors over the San Francisco Giants by the score of 2 to 1.

Los Angeles came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring

base-hit.  Gary Matthews was next and he reached on an error.  Wayne Garrett
then hit a deep fly which scored a run.  Steve Garvey was up next and he
