april 15 46,934 fans were treated to a fine game at Candlestick Park as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The Los Angeles Dodgers won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7. The score was knotted at 6 after nine innings. Finally, Los Angeles pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Roger Metzger led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Gary Matthews stepped up next and he drew a walk. Two outs later Steve Garvey came to the plate and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Dusty Baker was up next and he delivered a single driving home two runs. Baker took second on the throw. Los Angeles rapped out 11 hits for the night. Steve Dunning(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Dunning got relief help from Stan Wall who gained credit for his 2nd save. Gary Lavelle(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He had trouble throwing strikes and issued 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
