Subject: Expos at Cubs Week 3

Game 1

Rick Reuschel delivered 8 solid innings and Steve Brye had 3 base hits as the

Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 2 to 1.

Reuschel (2-2) gave Chicago NL a solid outing. He allowed only 4 hits and 1

walk in 8 innings lowering his ERA from 4.61 to 3.82. Montreal threatened in

the 9th but Chicago NL was able to put down the rally.

Reuschel got help from Tippy Martinez who was credited with his 5th save. The

losing pitcher was Don Stanhouse (1-2). He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings giving

up 6 hits and 4 walks.

Alan Bosslet was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good

contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning

these tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt about it!'

Game 2

Ray Burris allowed 3 hits while blanking Montreal and Bill Madlock blasted a

homerun and had 2 RBI at Wrigley Field where the Chicago NL Cubs beat the

Montreal Expos 7 to 0.

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance

provided by Madlock. He smacked a single in the 1st inning, smashed a

solo-shot out of the park (his 5th of the season) in the 3rd inning and

tripled which plated a run in the 4th inning. Chicago NL finished with 13

hits in the victory.

It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Burris (2-2). Larry Christenson (0-2)was

the losing pitcher. He was unable to control the Chicago NL offense and

allowed 12 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.

Game 3

Frank Tanana struck out 13 batters as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL

Cubs by a score of 4 to 1.

Tanana (3-1) escaped virtually unscathed against the Chicago NL hitters. He

allowed only 4 hits and no walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.43 to

2.70. Montreal had 8 hits for the night.

Andy Messersmith (1-3) ended up with the loss. Tanana was pleased with his

performance. He noted, 'I had good command of all my pitches. Just as

important, my location was right on.'

Game 4

Baseballs were flying all over the ballpark as the Montreal Expos ran

roughshod over the seemingly hapless Chicago NL Cubs. The Montreal offense

rolled up a total of 11 runs!.

Montreal took the lead for good in the 7th inning scoring one runner on 3

hits. Steve Rogers delivered a one-base hit. Jerry White next to the plate

and he lined a base-hit. Earl Williams then delivered a single scoring the

run. Montreal out-hit Chicago NL for the game, 19 hits to 10.

The win was credited to Rogers (3-0) who went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3

runs. Bruce Sutter (1-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run

and 2 hits without retiring a batter.

With this win, Montreal has a division leading 11-7 record. They have been

5-5 lately. With the loss Chicago NL now has a record of 8-10.
