Subject: Re: [PreSmiley] Deeper Draft? Fact or Fiction?
Since there are four less teams in Pre-SMILEY, there are actually more free agents per team. So, it is a deeper draft both in number, and quality, of players. dewing19 wrote:
With the questions posed earlier about the future of pre-SMILEY I decided to look at the hard number and see if we really will have a deeper draft pool available. Our only reference of course is SMILEY. I compared the free agent pools for both 1966 and 1974. Here are some findings. 1966 1974 batters w/>400 ab's 11 17 pitchers w/>150 IP's 10 13 batters w/>100 ab's 50 59 pitchers w/>35 IP's 49 73 average # of players available per team 6.2 6.6 It would appear that the draft pools are equal. However we must consider some other factors. I'll just concentrate on the batters w/>400 at-bats. The trends established, I assume, will be the same for pitchers. The 1966 batters have an OPS of 33 points HIGHER than the league average. The 1974 batters have an OPS of 4 points LOWER than the league average. There are five batters in the 1966 pool (E Howard, C Boyer, M Wills, E Matthews, and D Mincher) with long term contracts (5 years or more) while there are only two (J Morales and L Piniella). No doubt, this is a striking difference in quality. One should also keep in mind that the 1974 pool doesn't include players who might have been traded to their real-life 1974 teams previously to avoid the draft (or being claimed). Bill Madlock is one that comes to mind. There you go. SteveD
