Subject: Draft Order Ideas
With some concerns being noted by some have-nots (those NOT owning NYA and LAN)I thought it might be a good idea to throw out some ideas on the order of future drafts so that we can alleviate any concerns about parity, purity, tanking, and cheating. BEFORE I START I WOULD LIKE TO STATE THAT SERIOUS CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO USING THE REAL-LIFE RECORDS OF OUR TEAMS AS THE BASIS IN DETERMING DRAFT ORDER. This would completely eliminate any incentive to "tank". As with any system there will always be inequities but in general the teams with HOF rookies on the way are the better won/loss teams. This would address concerns of managers of the have-nots who would continually face an uphill battle to keep up. PARITY - we all want to have some chance of competing PURITY - how close can we maintain a "flavor" of the real-life teams without seriously effecting PARITY TANKING - nobody wants this CHEATING - NOBODY wants this. Anybody who whould cheat (for any reason) is a mental case. This is a GAME and only a game. I'm only mentioning this because in certain draft schemes it is a factor. I'll lay out some options and their advantages/disadvantages. STRAIGHT W/L - This traditional method is too flawed for consideration, serious incentive to TANK. STRAIGHT LOTTERY (each team getting one chance)- status quo is maintained, no tanking, and no attempt at parity. Also, probably no one would trade a number one pick because it's value would vary so widely. Each team has a 6.2% of getting the top pick WEIGHTED LOTTERY (the best w/l getting 1 chance, the 2nd best getting 2 chances, and so on.) We still don't know for sure who gets what pick, there is a minor incentive to tank, and still no incentive to cheat. The worst team has an 11.8% chance of getting the #1 pick The worst three teams have a 33.1% chance of getting #1 The best three teams have a 4.4% chance of getting #1 pick The best team has a 0.7% chance of getting the #1 pick WEIGHTED LOTTERY ALTERNATE (the best w/l has 5 chances, the 2nd best has 6 chances, and so on.) This of course is similar to the above but the numbers change slightly. The worst team has a 10% chance of getting #1 The worst three teams have a 28.5% chance of getting #1 The three best teams have a 9.0% chance of getting #1 The best teams has a 2.5% chance of getting #1 The last option I believe achieves the proper balancing of attempting PARITY and limiting the incentive to TANK. There you go. SteveD |
