Subject: PROPOSAL: opinions wanted
Hello fellow pre-SMILEY owners: My name is Steve Dewing and I'm ready to play some ball. There is an issue that caught my eye from scouting out the 1967 teams and also from observing a couple of situations in SMILEY. It happens when players get locked into positional situations (via draft, trades, rookies) and are either forced onto the bench or into the trade market. I have discussed this Alan and he's open to discussion on the matter. Let's say for example Jim Fregosi is available to draft. Jim's one of the better shortstops of the 60's, a real solid player. Now let's say the owner of the Tigers, recognizing a player of Fregosi's skill, is amazed that no one has picked him and it's third round. Not likely, but stick with me. Of course in a real life situation it would be a no-brainer. However, looking ahead the owner sees that, for whatever reason, Dick McAuliffe - the regular second basemen in 1967 and 1966, spent all of 1964 and 1965 at shortstop. Now in reality given that situation Fregosi
would be drafted , put at SS, and McAuliffe to 2nd base. Given the present SMILEY rules, if the Tigers drafted Fregosi and 1965 came around they would have to split time or one would have to be traded. That's all good and fine because we all have the ability to look ahead see potential conflicts. However I feel one of the special things about SMILEY is that continuity of player retention leaves each team always bearing some resemblance to their real-life counterparts. I'll feel that without some creativity on our parts that such situations (and there are several examples in SMILEY) stifle the ability to manage our teams but can
lead to situations where fine players (such as Fregosi and McAuliffe) can get stuck into situations where can't get anywhere near the at-bats that they had in real life. In light of that, here's my proposal . 1) allow players to play a position that they played previously or after the year in question. This rating would the lower range/error/arm rating if they played both years at another position.(i.e. Richie Allen (one of 1967's top free agents) played OF for 47 games in 1966, and 139 games n the OF in 1968. He would be allowed to play OF for pre-SMILEY at the lower of the two season's ratings. 2) A threshold of games played at other positions must be met to qualify. This would be determined by agreement of all of us. I have attached a spreadsheet to shows the players involved and how their numbers would be affected by differing thresholds. 3) I did the research on this info. It only took me about an hour. I would be willing research the next several seasons and share this with everybody. So nobody will be put out by this. I could then make the changes to the players in Strat, and give them to Alan
for distribution. In conclusion it may be a small matter and may not effect that many players but I believe it will give the managers a little flexibility, will not effect realism in any substantial way, is easy to do, would impart no advantage if implemented now (since we don't know our teams or draft order)and hopefully could avoid situations where quality players would have to sit on the bench or owners would be forced into a trade. Thanks for listening. Please take a look at the file and tell me what you think (good or bad) Steve Dewing
