Subject: Re: Re: The future (history?) of Pre-Smiley
Tom, You make a good point about the fact that working backwards is not the same as going forward with regard to the rookies. One factor that nobody has mentioned yet is trades. I would like to think that Babe Ruth and others like him will be available in the drafts, but many of them probably will not be. Thanks to the "Dick Allen Rule" (DAR), the Yankees have maximum incentive to trade for Ruth early, and the same logic applies to every other player at that level. That could be interpreted as an argument for doing away with the DAR, but I'm not suggesting that at all; I'm just pointing out that the resemblance between the real teams and our teams could be significantly greater than we think. With draft picks allowed to be traded in Pre-SMILEY, I anticipate a more wide-open league as far as deals being made, and I will be greatly surprised many if the Hall-of-Fame types do not somehow find their way "home". Not all of them can, of course, but I suspect a majority will do so. While I am not the most pro-trading guy in the world, I like that approach better than claims, since Ruth's "rookie" team will benefit in a deal (by getting *something* for him). Since the Yankees cannot rely on getting Ruth automatically (via a claim, for the comparatively bargain-basement price of a #1 pick), they will not be so hasty to abandon trade efforts. I look forward to that sort of thing - a team taking Ruth in the 1935 draft for the express prurpose of extortion. :-) Seriously, both sides have every reason to work out an equitable deal. The team with the Babe in '35 is looking to fill some holes, and the Yankees rationale is obvious. With deals like this being common, the drafts may not be as deep in Ruths and Spahns and Kiners as I may have once thought, but they should still be pretty good. Alan --- In PreSmiley@yahoogroups.com, "counselordude2000" < taustad@m...> wrote: Alan, I guess it's just the idea that we are going backward in time, so players aren't actually rookies with the teams that get them as "rookies" anyway. Add that to the fact that they probably played their best seasons for a team other than the team they will be a "rookie" for and we are very far away from resembling the actual teams, much farther than SMILEY. I understand your degrees of resemblance. A majority of teams will have close to no resemblance to their real teams with the "rookies" they will receieve in our league. Guys will rarely play with the team they made their mark on except in the case of Mantles and Koufax's. I'm in either way, but I just see this as making the division of teams even more significant. I also agree that the draft's will be deeper, so teams will have more of an opportunity to build. Just wanted to clarify my point of view. Tom |
