As everyone should be aware by now, the draft is continuing by e-mail,
however all members are invited to attend a League Chat this Sunday
beginning at 8:00 PM eastern time. The location - unless we find a better
one - is the Delphi Chat area which is linked to the 1968 web page, or you
can get there directly using: www.delphi.com/smiley1968.
Like the other rooms we've tried, this unfortunately seems to be a Java
Area, so some people may experience difficulty (or impossibility) trying to
get in.
The purpose of the meeting is basically just to chat, but more importantly
it is to answer questions or clarify issues that people might have. We
encourage everyone to try to attend (browser-permitting), even if it is only
for a brief time.
If you have a specific issue you'd like to discuss, feel free to send it to
the league in advance so people can be thinking about it prior to Sunday if
they choose.

P.S. Below is a good example of some questions (and answers) which an owner
raised earlier today. This was an issue which is not explicitly discussed
in the Constitution, and hopefully now it is clearer. We initally felt that
Restricted players who are Uncarded would have to be kept, but that's a
little too restrictive, and has been changed:
Q: When would Player X be eligible to be cut if he was traded in Smiley:
1968 Carded on Oak
1969 Played with Oak but not carded
1970 Did not play in major leagues
1971 Carded on Oak
A: Player X is Unrestricted after 1968 since he is uncarded in 1969. It
doesn't matter if he was traded or not.
Q: What about if Player X was in the current draft
1968 Carded on Hou
1969 Played with Hou but not carded
1970 Did not play in major leagues
1971 Carded on Hou
A: same as above. Player X is Unrestricted after 1968.
Q: What about if Player X was a rookie on a Smiley team in 1968. Would LA
get
him in 1971 if LA didn't protect him in 1969 and 1970 or does he go into the
draft in 1971?
1968 Carded on LA
1969 Played with LA but not carded
1970 Did not play in major leagues
1971 Carded on LA
A: If you want the player to automatically be yours in 1971, you have to
keep him when he is Uncarded. Otherwise, he will be in the draft in 1971.
Note that in all cases, an Uncarded player may be retained, but can never be
drafted. So in the third example, this player cannot be drafted in 1969 or
1970 (since he has no card) even if LA doesn't retain him. But, by failing
to retain him in either year, LA causes the player to be eligible for the
1971 draft. We do have the rights to all our own "rookies" automatically,
but by 1971, this player isn't a rookie anymore. The definition of "rookie"
implies that it's the player's FIRST card in SMILEY. |
