Subject: multi-carded players
For the 1968 season, Strat gave two players multiple cards - one in each
league. Those players are Lou Johnson (Indians & Cubs) and Rocky Colavito
(Dodgers & Yankees). Three players will have multiple cards in 1969 (Tommy
Davis, Jim "Ball Four" Bouton and Vic Davalillo).
Two problems arise: we cannot have TWO Rocky Colavito's playing at once,
and: how do we determine (for 1968 at least) who gets the player?
Since one of Lou Johnson's teams (Indians) is not even in SMILEY, the Cubs
get him. Since the Yankees were given a *26* man roster to begin with - and
EVERYBODY else was given only 24 or 25 - the Dodgers get Colavito. The
Yankees are now down to 25.
Such players in future years will be treated like any other player. Vic
Davalillo will have cards for the Angels and the Cardinals in 1969. He
played for the Angels in 1968. Since he did not switch teams PRIOR to
1969 - but rather DURING 1969 - he is NOT a free agent prior to 1969.
Whoever drafts Davalillo in 1968 keps him for the ENTIRE 1969 season.
Whoever winds up with the 1969 Seattle Pilots will keep both Davis & Bouton
for the ENTIRE season. All three players will be free agents AFTER 1969.
Now: which card to use? In order to have Johnson, Colavito, Bouton, etc.
reflect their actual OVERALL statistcs for a season, they will all have
Fringe Player cards created that represent the 'whole' player in a given
season. The league files which I will post to the web site later today will
contain ONE Lou Johnson (on the Cubs) and ONE Rocky Colavito (on the
Dodgers). Those cards will be ones I create; I don't mind doing so since
only a very small number of players in a given season will be affected.
Please be aware that this is how such players - few though they are - will
be handled, since potential draft strategies now and in the future could be
affected.
