G1 You would think that when a team out-hits the opponent, 14-10, they'd be on the better side of the blowout, but Chicago's hitters added 8 walks to the mix and actually scored 4 consecutive bases-loaded walks in the crucial 6-run 5th inning. Meanwhile, facing a lineup of 8 lefthanded/switch-hitters, 9R Anthony Young moved to 3-0 with a very workmanlike effort (5 1/3 11 2 1 0 5). Long-man Dave Otto finished things off with 3 2/3 innings of 1-run relief. Chicago's Shawon Dunston flexed the biggest bat by going 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and his 2nd home run.

G2 Florida started posting crooked numbers on the board in this one
and built a 5-1 lead after 5 innings with the final 2 runs coming on Jeff Conine's homer. Florida starter Bobby Witt (7 9 5 2 3 7) and the fielders behind him allowed the Cubs to take the lead away with 2 runs in the 7th (on another homer by Dunston) and 3 in the 8th. In this contest, the Marlins would not be deterred as Greg Colbrunn followed 3 9th inning walks with a sac fly to send the game to extra innings. Then, in the 10th, Marlin hitters used a HBP, stolen base, IBB, single, another IBB, and a final single to score 3 times. Robb Nen's 2 scoreless innings provided him the win. Dunston added 3 more hits in this one to lead both teams.
Final Score: Florida 9, Chicago 6, 10 innings WP- Nen 2-0, LP- X. Hernandez 0-1 HR- Conine (7), Dunston (3)
G3 In the finale Chicago used 4 different multi-run innings to win a slugfest. Every Cubs starter had at least 1 hit, and Mike Blowers raised his average from .157 to .218 with a sizzling 4-for-4 effort that included a home run and a walk. Florida didn't lay down as the Marlins had 9 hits and 6 runs to close within 8-6 on Greg Colbrunn's 2-out RBI double. But, Ryne Sandberg's 2-run blast in the 8th put the game away for good. Chuck Carr led the visitor's from the leadoff spot with a 3-for-4 line.
