Last week we played a superior team (we can say that every week) on even terms and came out behind; this week we played a superior team on even terms and came out a little ahead. All games were very close.... Game 1: Toronto immediately responded to Milwaukee's 4-run first with a 4-run second; Dave Stieb & John Fulgham then pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way until, with one out in the MLA ninth and nobody on base, the Jays reverted to our roots by having good fielders blow 2 consecutive x-plays. Paul Molitor's squeeze bunt then ended the game. Final score: 5-4. Game 2: The Brewers bunched their offense into another big inning, but Jim Clancy settled down and Jerry Garvin notched 2.1 scoreless relief innings as the Blue Jays rebounded from the early 3-0 deficit to win by the score of 5-3. Ted Cox's pinch double in the TOA seventh plated the go-ahead run off of reliever Bob McClure. Game 3: The Jays blew several leads of up to 3 runs, but reversed the outcome of game 1 by *winning* on a ninth-inning unearned run (probably a first in franchise history). Final score: 7-6. Geoff Zahn & Jon Matlack were identically ineffective, but Dyar Miller was able to nail down the save by retiring all 4 batters he faced, 3 of them by strikeouts. Alan |
