As Expo pitching runs out of gas, so do the victories… New manager attached.
Game 1 Larry Parrish had 2 base hits and Jose Deleon allowed Mike Mashanic to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium. Deleon (10-7) put on a good performance. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Pittsburgh banged out 8 hits on the night. Dan Schatzeder (9-4) was the loser in relief. Pittsburgh now has a record of 61-54. With the loss Montreal now has a record of 59-56.
Game 2 Larry McWilliams had a strong outing and Tony Pena lofted one into the 'cheap seats' at Three Rivers Stadium where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 7 to 0. Pittsburgh took the lead off Vern Ruhle in the first inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring held up. Pittsburgh banged out 10 hits on the night. It was the 2nd shutout of the year for McWilliams (9-7). Ruhle (3-7) absorbed the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 9 hits in 6 innings. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances tonight,' Steve Bivens said. 'McWilliams just was too much for our guys.'
Game 3 Bert Blyleven hurled a fine complete game shutout at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Montreal Expos 4 to 0. Blyleven (15-5) put on a good performance. He allowed only 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Pittsburgh had 11 hits for the night. Ed Lynch (3-5) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 9 hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 Harold Baines cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 8.
The game was won by Montreal with a run in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Baines drew a walk. Dan Driessen next to the plate and he doubled. Ozzie Virgil followed, but he was set down on strikes. Andre Dawson came up and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Spike Owen came to the plate and drew a walk. Dan Schatzeder was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Montreal had 12 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 9.
The winning pitcher was Schatzeder (10-4) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Schatzeder got relief help from Jeff Reardon who gained credit for his 25th save. Don Robinson (4-8) was hit with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.
Baines said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
