Dodgers score 1 run in the sixth inning of the first game
and don’t score again until the fifth inning of the final game. New manager attached.
Game 1 40,753 fans watched an exciting game at Dodger Stadium. The Montreal Expos snapped their 5 game slide and topped the ice-cold Los Angeles Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.
Juan Nieves (5-3) earned the victory with a fine relief performance. He did not allow a hit or a walk in his 2 innings. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Tim Burke was credited with his 19th save. Neil Allen (4-7) was the loser in relief. The Montreal ballclub's record now stands at 61-82. Billy Vanson was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.' Game 2 Harold Baines had 4 hits and Jay Tibbs hurled a fine complete game shutout as the Montreal Expos defeated the floundering Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 4 to 0 at Dodger Stadium.
Tibbs (7-10) gave Montreal a solid outing. He allowed only 5 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings dropping his ERA from 4.85 to 4.54. Montreal had 9 hits for the night.
Dan Petry (1-4) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 7 walks. Game 3 Catcher Mike Diaz had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Mark Langston blanked Los Angeles in a very well-pitched complete game at Dodger Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the reeling Los Angeles Dodgers 2 to 0.
Langston (8-12) was virtually untouchable. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.
Orel Hershiser (13-14) was tagged with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work. Game 4 Bob Walk pitched a complete game at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos 4 to 2.
Los Angeles scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. The key offensive moment was provided by Kal Daniels who brought a roar from the partisan Dodger Stadium fans when he stroked a single which was good for two runs. Montreal was retired without difficulty in the 9th.
Walk (12-12) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. The loss was charged to Dennis Martinez (15-9). 'It felt really nice to get this win,' Walk said. 'I kind of dictated the game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out this time.'
