Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals
Toronto takes the first 2 games before returning to typical choking chump
form.... Game 1: We didn't wait until game 3 to start choking, it just took that
long for us to succeed at it. Today the Jays had a 6-1 lead in the 7th;
final score: 6-5. TOA starter Bud Black was cruising until allowing an
unearned run in the 7th and then falling apart in the 8th with considerable
assistance from Tom Henke. Willie Blair then retired everyone he faced
(aside from another error) and earned his first career save. The 3
unearned runs we got from the Royals suddenly turned out to be very important in
the end. ==================================== Game 2: Today's 2 starters (Combs, Saberhagen) entered the contest with
ERAs over 8.0 so naturally we had a pitchers duel -- for a while -- and then
something even more bizarre happened: Combs actually pitched well for 8
innings! Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the 4th and Combs gave a run right
back. But we got 3 more and the Royals only 1 more (unearned). Final
score: 5-2, with Combs & Ward combining on a 5-hitter. ==================================== Game 3: Two more abused starters: David Wells' season of misery continued
today as did that of KC's Bruce Ruffin, who lowered his ERA to 9.26 by allowing
4 runs in 5 IP. The Jays battled back from our 10 LOB to tie the game in
the 7th and were seemingly headed for extra innings when, with 2 outs (of
course) in the bottom of the 9th, HAL decided to end the game without one of
those pesky dice rolls on which anything can happen. Runner on 3rd, passed
ball, unearned run, gave over. Final score: 7-6. The cheap PB may have been the final nail in Toronto's coffin, but there
were also the plethora of easy BP singles we missed while the Royals were
successful on a critical BP HR 1, fb(B) 2-20. ==================================== Game 4: Jimmy Key was given an early 3-0 lead at which point the offense
naturally went back into LOB mode. The Royals whittled the lead away and
the choke was completed in their final at bats of the day when ace reliever
Duane Ward walked the bases loaded and then allowed the game-losing hit.
Final score: 5-3. Although Key did not pitch well (7 IP, 11 hits, 4 runs) it was still one of
his better performances of 1990, lowering his ERA to a mere 6.79. The TOA
rotation is one of the best (if what's shown on the cards means anything at all)
but their collective ERA is just a shade under 5.0 for the year. Alan |
